Houston, 12 February 2008
HOUSTON, TX – SUEZ Energy Resources NA, the U.S. retail energy business of SUEZ Energy North America, today announced that it has added Demand Response services to its product line, an addition the company believes will be increasingly helpful for customers both individually and regionally as they seek to better control their electricity use and costs.
Demand Response, an important initiative codified in U.S. federal legislation as part of the 2005 Energy Policy Act (EPACT), is a term used to describe electricity curtailment programs that make a reduction in both energy use and cost possible. Demand Response programs offer electricity customers the chance to receive financial incentives for temporarily reducing their energy consumption, either in response to periods of high market prices or when electricity grid reliability is threatened due to high demand.
Studies show that customers who participate in Demand Response programs have experienced lower electric bills through a combination of reduced consumption and program incentives. As an additional benefit, the increased price elasticity of demand provided by these programs has helped lower the overall regional market price of power.
“SUEZ Energy Resources’ launch into Demand Response services demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing sustainable solutions to our economy’s growing need for new ways to better manage our energy supplies,” said Michel Sirat, president and CEO of SUEZ Energy Resources NA. “We are proud to form strategic partnerships with two companies who are in the business of providing first-class Demand Response services to commercial and industrial customers. We look forward to offering these services to our customers, developing new Demand Response solutions, and growing consumer participation in all deregulated markets in the United States.”
SUEZ Energy Resources’ strategic partnerships are with EnergyConnect, a subsidiary of Microfield Group, Inc. (MICG.OB) and Enerwise, a Comverge group. EnergyConnect’s next generation Demand Response platform provides participating energy consumers with the intelligence needed to proactively shape electricity consumption and make it available to the wholesale market during times of peak demand or high prices. EnergyConnect, the largest full-service Demand Response provider in the mid-Atlantic and Midwest-based PJM wholesale market, will assist in providing Demand Response Services to SUEZ’s customers in this market.
Enerwise provides services to hundreds of domestic and international commercial and industrial customers, including more than 100 of the Fortune 500 companies, and manages over 1,600 megawatts of demand response and renewable energy load from its headquarters in Philadelphia. The company will provide back office and technology expertise for SUEZ’s Demand Response services to participating customers in New York, New England and Texas.
SUEZ Energy Resources NA currently serves commercial and industrial customers in 10 states: Texas, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Connecticut, 2 Delaware and also Washington, D.C. The company serves approximately 25,000 customer accounts, mainly with commercial and industrial customers having peak demands ranging from 50 KW to more than 200 MW, for a total contracted load of 4,500 MW.
